Explanation time!! Sorry to those who don't play the card game, I will try to cut down on the card game jargon.

Comic Explanation

So essentially in this comic, Yami is playing in the real-life card game. He goes to buy a booster pack, hoping for a good card.

Yami gets BLS-EotB, and makes a Chaos deck. After all, who doesn't like to win?

Then he manages to make it to the World Tournament, with his Chaos deck and his firm belief in the Heart of the Cards.

And then, this September's ban list is released. BLS-EotB is banned!! Everyone I knew was like "OMG!!! It's finally ban!" Some people were happy, most were not. Because Chaos deck has reigned for the past two years. Some spent a lot of money making a Chaos deck.

So anyway, Yami decides to go back to playing Spellcaster deck...

TCG explanation

In the Yugioh Trading Card Game, it's not like the show where everyone uses a different deck. In reality, most players would copy the most powerful deck. It was getting from bad to worse... If you went to a tournament all you would see was the Chaos Deck, with Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning (BLS-EotB). It's very easy to summon and it can attack twice.

Effect: This card can only be Special Summoned by removing 1 LIGHT and 1 DARK monster in your Graveyard from play. Once during each of your turns, you can select and activate 1 of the following effects: - Remove 1 monster on the field from play. If you activate this effect, this card cannot attack during this turn. - If this card destroyed your opponent's monster as a result of battle, it can attack once again in a row.

The problem with the game was that everyone used the same cards eventually, if you didn't, you wouldn't stand much of a chance. Everyone uses Pot of Greed, Mirror Force, Torrential Tribute... there's a long list of these "staple" cards. It HAS to be in your deck if you want to win. In tournaments, it was usually Chaos deck vs. Chaos deck, the one who summons BLS-EotB first wins. This made the game boring and frustrating, until the ban list came up.

The purpose of the ban list is to prevent overly powerful cards from inhibiting creativity. A lot of people also quit the TCG because the game got boring... me included. *cough*went to play Magic The Gathering*cough* So now Konami had made the ban list, it's updated every March and September. It was slowly recovering the players... It is nice to begin seeing interesting decks in tournament and casual play.
